Reiki 靈氣

The Five Reiki Principles

1. For today, do not be angry.

2. For today, do not worry.

3. For today, be filled with gratitude.

4. For today, be diligent in your work.

5. For today, be kind to people.

What is Reiki?

Reiki literally means Universe energy.

Rei = Spiritual or Sacred  Ki = Universe Life Force Energy

Reiki is a non-invasive Japanese healing technique and lifestyle practice.

"Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery."

How Does Reiki Work?

There are many metaphors for how and why Reiki works, that explain it quite wonderfully, in my opinion. However, there is little scientific evidence for how Reiki actually works. Which is why there are so many skeptics of this healing modality.

The best way I have been able to understand how Reiki works is through electricity. Electricity works through a magnetic field. Electricity needs a conduit. For example: a potato. A potato has the potential to conduct electricity because it is a source filled with electrolytes. These electrolytes act as an electrical conductor which means they allow the flow of electric charges, thus conducting electricity. Electricity doesn’t travel through the wires from the conduit to the output. Rather, it travels through magnetic fields surrounding the wires. I believe Reiki works in an extremely similar way.

My hypothesis is that the Reiki Practitioner acts as the conduit and the Universe Life Force Energy (ULFE)/ki/prana/etc. travels through the magnetic fields in the air to the client; or transmits a frequency to the client like Bluetooth. It comes down to intention. Much like how we use electricity to specifically power lights and how we connect our phone to Bluetooth to listen to music, Reiki is specifically using Universe Life Force Energy to help aid relaxation and more.

Reiki is metaphysically understood through the Subtle Body System. The Subtle Body System includes: the Chakras, the Meridians, and the Aura. Ki/Qi/Prana/Universal Life Force Energy flows within the physical body through the Subtle Body System. The balanced flow of healthy ki is the source of well-being. It is theorized that prana is what animates the physical organs and tissues and flows through them. This Universal Life Force Energy nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. When the flow of healthy ki is disrupted through dis-ease, it causes diminished functioning within one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body and emotional mind.

Universal Life Force Energy is theorized to respond to thoughts and feelings. When we have "positive" thoughts, it is theorized that we increase our flow of prana and this causes us to feel better. However, when we have negative thoughts, it is theorized that the flow of prana is disrupted causing blockages. When negative thoughts become lodged in the subconscious mind, it can create a permanent disruption in the flow of healthy ki. This can occur when we either consciously or unconsciously accept negative thoughts or feelings about ourselves and our environment.

It is also theorized that Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of energy fields and raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. This is theorized to cause the negative energy to break apart and fall away, which heals the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force energy to flow in a natural way.

Is Reiki the same as Prana, Ki, Mana, etc.?

One area in Reiki I am personally undecided on is if Reiki is using a different life force energy. In the Reiki community, it is often taught that Reiki is in some way special from other energy healing techniques. That Reiki is using a special kind of Life Force Energy and can only be channeled after being attuned by a Reiki master.

People who have considered themselves energy healers, who haven’t had Reiki training before, have reported an increase in efficiency in their sessions and psychic abilities after their Reiki attunement; which to some confirms that Reiki is using a special energy. However, from my own practice and studies, I theorize that these healing modalities like Reiki, Qi Gong, Shamanic Healing, and more, are all using the same healing energy, and are using different techniques to connect to it. Because of this, one practice over the other may feel more special and efficient the practitioner.

Some may connect more with the Reiki technique, while others may feel more connected to Shamanic healing techniques, Jin Shin, and more. This is very much up for debate, and is a synopsis of my own understanding.

Reiki is a non-invasive Japanese healing technique and lifestyle practice. Reiki is a spiritual and energetic healing practice, however it is not tied to any religion or dogma. Reiki is both a hands on and hands off practice that has been proven to lower stress levels and blood pressure. Reiki can be facilitated for anything living.

What is a Reiki Session Like?

A Reiki session is typically an hour long, and I also offer 2 hour sessions. Reiki at Kind Cocoon Wellness is generally facilitated on a massage table, however adjustments can be made for mobility if needed.

Unlike massage, Reiki sessions are had while fully clothed. So make sure to bring loose-fitting comfy clothes. Reiki is a hands-on / hands-off practice. So you have the option to decide between those or both, making Reiki a wonderful option for those seeking deep relaxation without physical touch.

Most clients feel a sense of relaxation and peace. Reiki can feel so tranquil that sometimes clients may fall asleep during the session. Don’t worry though, you will still receive all of the benefits of the session, sleeping or awake

What is the History of Reiki?

The history of Reiki is a troubled one due to the fact that when World War II ended, the Japanese were required to surrender to the United States. In turn, laws were enacted that banned all Eastern healing methods and required that only licensed Western Medical methods be practiced. Some Japanese healing groups, such as acupuncturists, were able to continue their practice through creating a government licensing system. The members of the Reiki Group, Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, decided they wanted to be self governed and went underground. Because of this, Reiki became extremely secret and known only by few.

William Lee Rand realized that there was little factual history of Reiki, so he embarked on a journey of uncovering it. He was able to trace Reiki back to 1914 to Matiji Kawakami, a Japanese therapist, who created a healing style he called Reiki Ryoho. In 1919, he published a book titled Reiki Ryoho to Sono Koka, or Reiki Healing and Its Effects. Before this, it was often accepted that Mikao Usui was the founder of Reiki. In March of 1922, Usui Sensei had his mystical experience on Mount Kurama, in which he was given the Reiki energy and, from this, developed his style of Reiki. He called it Usui Reiki Ryoho. It is interesting that Usui Sensei chose this name as it indicates that he knew that Reiki predated him. Long after his passing, it was still attributed to him.

Before his passing, Usui Sensei had asked his student, Chujiro Hayashi Sensei, to open his own Reiki Clinic, and to expand and develop Usui Reiki Ryoho based on his previous experience as a doctor in the Navy. He made quite a few valuable changes to the way Reiki was facilitated and taught.

Hayashi Sensei went on to teach Takata Sensei. Takata Sensei taught 22 students before her passing. She charged a whopping $10,000 to train Masters. She also was the one who spread the rumor that Usui Sensei was a minister and was spreading Jesus’ healing technique. It is believed she did this to make Reiki more comfortable for Western learners.

One thing that is important to understand is, that if it were not for Takata Sensei, Reiki most likely would have never have been practiced by people all over the world. Even in Japan, it would have become mostly unknown.
